Baltimore police officer charged with pimping wife

A31-year-old Baltimore Police officer was charged Friday with pimping out his wife after officers from a human trafficking task force found him outside a hotel room where the woman had agreed to have sex for cash with an undercover officer.
The child recovery task force was working a proactive investigation into human trafficking when they came across a "young-looking female" advertised as an escort on a website, police said. Officers arranged to meet the female at a hotel near BWI airport, court records show.
Inside the hotel room, a woman identified by police as Marissa Braun-Manneh told an undercover officer that she would have sex for $100, and she was placed under arrest, charging documents show. She said that her husband, Lamin Manneh, was waiting outside in a car, and that she gives him her money and he drives her from "date-to-date," according to court records. She also said that he posts the online ads using his credit card. Police said Manneh acknowledged his role in an interview with detectives, records show.
Elena Russo, a state police spokeswoman, said both husband and wife were charged because they appeared to be "working as a team."
Manneh, of the 2400 block of Marbourne Ave. in Baltimore, is an officer assigned to the Baltimore Police Department's Eastern District. State police said he was suspended without pay and that the city police internal affairs would investigate.
"This allegation is a disgrace and embarrassment to every member -- both current and retired -- who serve with the Baltimore Police Department," Baltimore's Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez said in a statement. "We expect every member of this department to hold themselves to the highest professional standards. Our colleagues and our community deserve nothing less."
Manneh was charged in Anne Arundel County District Court with one count each of human trafficking and prostitution, and was released on his own recognizance by a District Court commissioner, records show. Braun was charged with one count of prostitution and also released on her own recognizance.

Women accuse cop of date rape

Man resigns from state police amid allegations
EL PASO, TEXAS (KRQE) - A former New Mexico State Police officer is under investigation for allegedly drugging and raping two women, according to News 13 sources.
Joe Ballesteros, 44, resigned from state police just last month and has not been charged with any crime.
But sources familiar with the investigation, who requested anonymity, told News 13 that two women have come forward in the last year claiming to have met Ballesteros at bars in El Paso, Texas, and agreed to go home with him to his house in Santa Teresa, NM. However, that is the last thing the women said they remembered before waking up later at Ballesteros’ home, the sources said.
The women told police they suspected they were given some kind of date-rape drug, then sexually assaulted and possibly raped, the sources said.
The women filed police reports with the El Paso Police Department, which refused to comment on the case. The City of El Paso also refused to release the police reports, saying that one of the incidents – which occurred March 30 at Ballesteros’ home in Santa Teresa – remains under investigation by El Paso police.
The city made no mention of the incident that allegedly occurred a year ago, according to letters sent to News 13.
Ballesteros worked for New Mexico State Police for a little more than a decade in Santa Fe, Farmington, Deming and Las Cruces. Investigators don’t know if there are other victims in those areas, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
However, when New Mexico State Police found out about the allegations against Ballesteros, the agency began the process to fire him. Ballesteros resigned before that process was completed. He did not give a reason for his resignation and state police declined to comment.
News 13 tracked down Ballesteros at his home in Santa Teresa and asked him if he would talk about the allegations against him.
“I have no idea about anything,” he said, after answering the door wearing a T-shirt advertising an El Paso bar.
Asked why he resigned from state police, he said, “I have no idea. I’d rather not talk to you,” and shut the door.

worst of the month

The worst case is from Bolivia, North Carolina. According to the complaint filed by a minor’s guardian ad litem, a police officer, Jaymin Lenwood Murphy, came to a home to investigate allegations that an adult had sent inappropriate photos via cell phone to a minor child. The officer said he needed to question the minor in private. Once in private, the officer had the minor remove her clothing so he could take photos for his ‘investigative file.’ It gets worse. The officer later returned on minor’s fourteenth birthday and raped her.

The runner-up story comes from Bakersfield, California. A 21-year-old woman called the police to report a burglary. Two deputies arrived and one led her into a room where she was then sexually assaulted under the pretense of a ‘pat-down’ search by the deputy. The authorities did move promptly against this deputy–so good for them.

Providence cop convicted of rape to appeal sentence

A Providence Police officer convicted of rape in 2010 will appeal his sentence before the Rhode Island Supreme Court Tuesday.
Marcus Huffman, 40, was convicted in 2010 of raping a woman he picked up outside a Providence Club while on duty. A Judge sentenced Huffman to 40-years in prison for his actions.
Huffman picked up the woman who was intoxicated and physically helpless and offered her a ride home. Instead he brought her to a police substation and raped her on the bathroom floor.
When the woman left she went to her aunt's house to call the police to report the incident. Huffman was one of the responding officers.
In court he issued a tearful apology to the woman her family and the Providence Police Department.
Huffman's attorney said the act was not rape but instead consensual sex but the woman took the stand during the trial saying she is a lesbian and not physically attracted to men.
Huffman joined the force in 1994.

Officer Accused of Rape May Have Used Police Database to Find Woman

(Memphis) A Memphis Police officer is out of jail on bond after being indicted on rape and official misconduct charges.
30-year-old Aaron Reinsburg allegedly met a woman on Beale, then met up with her again later that night and raped her.
But it’s how the officer may have tracked the woman down that has people concerned.
Police officers take an oath to protect the community and to uphold the law. They have resources to do that, but when those tools play a part in a crime, it concerns a lot people.
“There are certain standards that police officers must keep,” said Sacia who is concerned about the allegations.
Reinsburg, a Memphis Police officer, allegedly used law enforcement databases to find a woman and then rape her.
“You are a public servant, here to protect the people and to use what you have to do something like that is just wrong,” Sacia said.
In January, Reinsburg met a woman on Beale St. while he was working. An indictment says the two exchanged numbers. The district attorney says he found the woman’s address using police resources on his cell phone and went to her house. That’s where a roommate let the officer in. The woman claims she woke to find Reinsburg raping her.
“If this truly did happen, justice has to be served for this woman,” said Sacia. “Rape is a really, really, really, ugly situation no matter who is involved.”
This isn’t the first time an officer has used police resources for personal gain. Last October, Darrell Malone was accused of using a dispatch operator to get the phone number of a driver who called the police on HIM while he was driving his motorcycle erratically while off-duty.
Sacia says it’s this kind of conduct that shakes people’s trust in police, “This is what makes people step back and go, ‘is this really why they’re here’.”
No one answered the door at Reinsburg’s Bartlett home on Saturday. He is out of jail on bond and suspended from the police dept. with pay while under investigation.
