PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Supreme Court has upheld the
first-degree sexual assault conviction of Marcus Huffman, a Providence cop found
guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman while on duty. The total sentence imposed by Superior Court
Judge Netti C. Vogel is 60 years, with 20 years of that suspended. At his Superior Court trial, the prosecution said that
Huffman encountered the woman, who had been drinking heavily and had smoked
marijuana, according to the court ruling, outside a Providence nightclub. The
authorities alleged Huffman persuaded her to get into his police car, took her
to a police substation and raped her in a bathroom. Huffman was later one of
threecops initially investigating the matter after the woman reported what
happened.
