PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police officials say they've
suspended an officer with pay while city and state authorities investigate
allegations that the officer sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman while on
duty.
Officials are not naming the officer and haven't filed
charges. The suspension with pay comes under the Law Enforcement Officers Bill
of Rights, which allows officers suspected of wrongdoing but not criminally
charged to remain anonymous.
The woman reported the alleged assault Tuesday to city and
state police while being treated at a hospital for injuries from the alleged
assault. City and state police are conducting a joint investigation.
It's not clear when or where the alleged incident happened
